In this “epic,” terms like entrail, seaborn, drowsy, nude, and casino are combined and recombined in unexpected ways. A more ambitious work, “Hero and Bad Mother in Epic, a poem,” was featured in the first issue of the South African anti-apartheid magazine Staffrider in 1978. “Computer Poem” ended up in the University of Cape Town’s student magazine in 1963. While the outcomes of these experiments did not exactly lead to great poetry, some of them were ultimately published. The programs were written at different levels of abstraction, from machine code to FORTRAN to what is known as “pseudocode”-nonexecutable coding shorthand. As Roach has shown, these experiments spanned more than a decade and several different computing architectures. The output was a series of lines from which he would make hand selections. He developed programs that, once compiled and executed, drew randomly-albeit in a set order-from indexes of words he had created. His personal archives show him trying to write poems using the machines for which he was writing code. The programmer’s interest in literature soon flowed back into his work with computers. Drawing on the language of computation, he declared that this one book was “probably the finest example of literary pure mathematics in English.” It was only The Good Soldier (1915)-with its concision, minimalism, and craft-that stood the test of time. However, he found the achievement of Ford’s writing to be limited, and thought the later works tailed off in quality. He recounted spending his Saturdays in the Reading Room of the British Museum as well as two evenings a week when the museum closed late. As scholar Rebecca Roach records, the programmer’s work with this operating system was focused on “conceptualizing the design and writing the code that would instruct the computer about which jobs to implement and in what order.” While this work was more interesting, he was still dissatisfied-and worried too about the use of the technology for the British weapons program.Ī reader of modernist literature, he found distraction by working on a masters thesis on Ford Madox Ford. This new technology, designed to allow multiple tasks to be undertaken simultaneously, was vital to using the resources of the machine more efficiently. He soon left IBM to work for rival company ICT, where he joined the team that was developing the “supervisor” for the Atlas 2 computer housed at the University of Cambridge. He was working in his first job at IBM, where he had imagined doing something significant, like “translating symbolic logic and set theory into digital codes.” Instead, he spent monotonous days talking about inventories and outflows. IN THE EARLY 1960s, a South African computer programmer was living miserably in Britain.

It also provides a degree of added dispersion and helps the treble to escape the recessed baffle. The tweeter sits behind a perforated steel brass cover initially conceived to protect the soft dome from damage when the speaker was moved around. This reflex-loaded loudspeaker has a front-firing port and a tag strip with a soldered jumper for setting up driver output on the front that is factory set up rather than in‑room. The cabinet is otherwise as per the standard design with birch ply construction and a recessed front baffle that creates a frame for the Tygan fabric grille to sit in, albeit there are squares of Velcro to keep it there. In other words, using this material for the baffle is not a big enough change for it to be outside the specification. It’s only 9mm thick like the regular birch ply version, but Panzerholz is so stiff that it’s impossible to bend this panel with your hands, which – as anyone who has picked up a piece of 9mm ply will know – is quite surprising.ĭespite this change, the SE version still qualifies as a licensed BBC design. The high rigidity and self-damping qualities of this material make it eminently well suited to an application where you want to minimise vibration and thus reduce coloration. The Classic LS5/9 SE is an upgraded version of Rogers’ standard version with a Panzerholz front baffle. But it’s the density that appealed to Whittle who, while developing a Panzerholz stand has found another application that should be even more useful to those wanting to make their music sound better loudspeaker cabinets. This is a hardcore version of plywood where the glue is replaced with resin, and the result is an extremely high-density material that is so unlike regular wood that it’s bulletproof and sinks in water. The story goes that Rogers’ designer Andy Whittle was looking around for good material to make a dedicated stand for his LS3/5A, the most iconic of BBC-designed loudspeakers and came across Panzerholz. Science consists of the theories and laws that are the general truths of nature as well as the body of knowledge they encompass. This module discusses the realm of physics (to define what physics is), some applications of physics (to illustrate its relevance to other disciplines), and more precisely what constitutes a physical law (to illuminate the importance of experimentation to theory). These analytical skills will help you to excel academically, and they will also help you to think critically in any professional career you choose to pursue. More importantly, you will gain analytical abilities that will enable you to apply these laws far beyond the scope of what can be included in a single book. In learning to apply these laws, you will, of course, study the most important topics in physics. The unifying aspect of physical laws and the basic simplicity of nature form the underlying themes of this text. Apparently unrelated topics are connected through broadly applicable physical laws, permitting an understanding beyond just the memorization of lists of facts. Understanding this law makes it easier to learn about the various forms energy takes and how they relate to one another. The law of conservation of energy (which says that energy can change form but is never lost) ties together such topics as food calories, batteries, heat, light, and watch springs. For example, what do a bag of chips and a car battery have in common? Both contain energy that can be converted to other forms. It is the underlying order of nature that makes science in general, and physics in particular, so enjoyable to study. We have found that nature is remarkably cooperative-it exhibits the underlying order and simplicity we so value. As humans, we make generalizations and seek order. In the face of all these details, we have discovered that a surprisingly small and unified set of physical laws can explain what we observe. From the flight of birds to the colors of flowers, from lightning to gravity, from quarks to clusters of galaxies, from the flow of time to the mystery of the creation of the universe, we have asked questions and assembled huge arrays of facts. Over the centuries, the curiosity of the human race has led us collectively to explore and catalog a tremendous wealth of information. Every day, each of us observes a great variety of objects and phenomena. The physical universe is enormously complex in its detail. Mechanics applies to a wide range of phenomena, essentially to anything that moves, but this course will highlight ties to and applications in the physical sciences. Students intending to take Physics courses beyond Introductory Physics or continue in the Physical Sciences stream should take MATH 1003 and PHYS 1021 as co-requisites to this course.Ĭo-requisite: One of MATH 1001 or MATH 1003, or permission of the instructor.Figure 1.2 The flight formations of migratory birds such as Canada geese are governed by the laws of physics. Understanding the causes of motion can be achieved by considering the forces acting on the object and/or by focusing on the conserved properties of the system (momentum, energy, angular momentum). Describing the motion of objects requires understanding the basic kinematics quantities position, displacement, velocity, and acceleration, as well as the connection between them. Mechanics is the study both of how objects move and why they move the way they do. This course is an introduction to the branch of physics called mechanics. We were intrigued, so we decided to give it a shot! Our newest Blackstone Griddle recipe creation: Spinach Tomato Chicken Tortellini! We invite our chess fans to join the fishtest testing framework and programmers to contribute to the project. The Stockfish project builds on a thriving community of enthusiasts (thanks everybody!) that contribute their expertise, time, and resources to build a free and open-source chess engine that is robust, widely available, and very strong. and ), and we are proud that it has been hailed as a ‘ historic violation settlement’ by the Software Freedom Conservancy. This settlement has been covered by major chess sites (see e.g. This has been an intense process that included filing a lawsuit, a court hearing, and finally negotiating a settlement that established that ChessBase infringed on the license by not distributing the Stockfish derivatives Fat Fritz 2 and Houdini 6 as free software, and that ensures ChessBase will respect the Free Software principles in the future. In this release period, the Stockfish team has successfully enforced its GPL license against ChessBase. This convention scales down evaluations a bit compared to Stockfish 15 and allows for consistent evaluations in the future. With a +1 evaluation, Stockfish has now a 50% chance of winning the game against an equally strong opponent. An evaluation of +1 is now no longer tied to the value of one pawn, but to the likelihood of winning the game. This release also introduces a new convention for the evaluation that is reported by search. The most exciting new development in the prior month of the Computer Chess Championship was the release of Dragon by the Komodo team. Stockfish continues to win in a dominating way all chess engine tournaments, including the TCEC Superfinal, Cup, FRC, DFRC, and Swiss as well as the CCC Bullet, Blitz, and Rapid events. Stockfish remains the premier chess engine on the planet on this update, topping all rating listsbullet, blitz, and rapid. More importantly, also for standard chess this release progressed and will win two times more game pairs than it loses against Stockfish 15. As a result, Elo gains are largest for FRC, reaching up to 50 Elo for doubly randomized FRC (DFRC). With this release, version 5 of the NNUE neural net architecture has been introduced, and the training data has been extended to include Fischer random chess (FRC) positions. I must admit I’m more inclined to believe the first set of figures as I’m around 1600 - 1650 ELO and am on par with level 7.Today, we have the pleasure to announce Stockfish 15.1.Īs usual, downloads will be freely available at /download Elo gain and competition results Secondly assuming the STS Ratings are correct with Level 20 nearer 3350:ĥ Stockfish lvl 09 : 2006.2 14.5 48 30.2% I double checked all my parameters, as level 15 slightly out performed level 18 which is strange. I ran a Stockfish 7 tournament over the last 2 days with levels 20 (top), 18, 15, 12, 09, 06 & 03.ħ Levels all play all, 8 rounds at 5 mins per game each. I think it’s more realistic we could pass these 2 parameters on to the test and see how close the ELO actually is, I’ll give it a try. I’d be happier if we could pass on the ‘limitstrength’ UCI parameter used in our Engines at lower levels, for example in Arasan, 1 of the lower levels that I use = 1640 GuideBookFile = books/guide/mini.bin JP! doesnt exist 1500 Elo defensive player who likes own mobility In Rodent II, there are loads of parameter changes required for each personality, for example here are personality Mark’s parameters: Yes that would be nice, I doubt if you could pass that many UCI parameters to the test before starting it though. We can say it was now, but how do we know for sure?" Ryan Hite went on to Denison University where, as a wide receiver, set numerous career and single-season records by the time he graduated from college. And I'm not even saying this was a bad one. Ken Roethlisberger, a former Georgia Tech quarterback, never publicly criticized Hite for playing Ryan ahead of his son Ben. "We did a bunch of drills and my son throwing to Ben was a better combination," he said. "I'm a nationally known knucklehead in many people's eyes," Hite conceded in a 2004 interview to the Toledo Blade but insisted his decision had not been an act of nepotism, or miscalculation. Instead, Roethlisberger played wide receiver. Roethlisberger did not play quarterback until his senior year, giving way to the coach's son, Ryan Hite. High school careerĪt Findlay High School in Findlay, Ohio, Roethlisberger was captain of the Trojans' football, basketball, and baseball teams. Known for playing outside the passing pocket in what he calls " backyard football", Roethlisberger grew up idolizing John Elway and has often been compared to him, wearing number 7 in his honor. He also had the fourth-highest career winning percentage (.710) as a starter in the regular season among quarterbacks with a minimum of 100 starts and was one of six quarterbacks in NFL history to have beaten at least 31 of the current 32 NFL teams. Upon retirement, he ranked 5th all-time in NFL career passing yards (64,088), 8th all-time in touchdowns (418), and 5th in completions (5,440) among quarterbacks with a minimum of 1,500 career attempts. Roethlisberger was one of the most prolific passers in NFL history. He appeared in his third Super Bowl in Super Bowl XLV, but the team lost by a score of 31–25 to the Green Bay Packers. Roethlisberger led the Steelers to a second Super Bowl title in four seasons as they defeated the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, 27–23, after completing a game-winning touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes with 35 seconds left in the game. In 2006, he became the youngest Super Bowl–winning quarterback in NFL history, leading the Steelers, in his second season, to a 21–10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL at the age of 23. Roethlisberger earned the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2004 and his first Pro Bowl selection in 2007.
